DESCRIPTION

Eliquis (Apixaban)is an oral anticoagulant used to prevent and treat blood clots and reduce the risk of stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFib). It belongs to a class of medications called Factor Xa inhibitors, which work by blocking a key enzyme in the clotting process, lowering the risk of thrombosis without requiring frequent blood monitoring.
Indications:
• Prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation
• Treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE)
• Prevention of DVT and PE following hip or knee replacement surgery
• Secondary prevention of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE)
Available Strengths:
• Eliquis 5 mg: Standard dosage for most adults
• Eliquis 2.5 mg: Prescribed for:
• Patients aged 80 years or older
• Body weight less than 60 kg
• Serum creatinine ≥ 1.5 mg/dL
• Long-term preventive maintenance following initial treatment
Dosage & Administration:
• Atrial Fibrillation: 5 mg twice daily (or 2.5 mg in selected patients)
• Initial DVT/PE treatment: 10 mg twice daily for 7 days, then 5 mg twice daily
• Post-operative thromboprophylaxis: 2.5 mg twice daily, starting 12–24 hours after surgery
Always take Eliquis exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop abruptly without medical advice to avoid the risk of blood clots.
Warnings & Precautions:
• Contraindicated in patients with active bleeding or known hypersensitivity to apixaban
• Use with caution in those with liver or kidney impairment
• Increases risk of bleeding, especially when combined with NSAIDs, antiplatelets, or other anticoagulants
• Report any signs of internal bleeding such as unusual bruising, blood in urine/stool, or prolonged bleeding
Drug Interactions:
• May interact with:
• CYP3A4 and P-gp inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, ritonavir)
• CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampin, carbamazepine)
• Always consult your physician or pharmacist before combining Eliquis with other medications
